The exteriors of Knot's Landing were filmed in Granada Hills,
California, a suburb of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.
"Seaview Circle" is really Crystalaire Place in Granada
Hills, and the homes were (and are) owned by private families.
(Please - if you ever go to visit these homes, remember that they
are privately owned. Please stay off of the property, and do not
bother the owners in any way!) Many outdoor scenes (in parking
lots) were filmed at the "Abco/Soskins" strip mall on
Balboa Boulevard. Park scenes were often at Pettit Park on Pettit
Avenue. Abby's office and her beach home were in Marina Del Ray,
California. The shots of the office buildings are from downtown
Los Angeles.
The interiors of Knots Landing were filmed at MGM/Warners studios.
The set designers and decorators really tried to make the character's
homes fit their personalities and station in life. For example,
the Fairgates were a long married couple with 3 children. The
decorators felt that Karen would have sensible, "family proof"
furniture, that would reflect the current middle-class trends.
The Wards were a newly married couple, so for the earliest episodes,
they did not have much furniture in their home, to reflect their
newlywed status. As they added more furniture and accessories,
they kept it trendy and inexpensive. The Avery's were a couple
who were into status and appearances. As such, their home was
decorated in a formal, traditional style, with expensive furnishings
and accessories. The Ewings furniture had been donated from Miss
Ellie Ewing. She supposedly sent Gary furniture that her family
was no longer using. So out-of-date, yet expensive furniture was
chosen.
Often sets were changed when the character's changed. For instance
when Karen married Mac, and Val divorced Gary, their homes were
changed to reflect their new status.
